About the project

Padang sits on one of the most active stretches of coastline in Indonesia, and when a tsunami warning comes, minutes decide everything. Padang Rescue is the multi-platform early warning and evacuation system I designed and built for my bachelor's thesis at Padang State University.

What I built

  • A mobile GIS app in React Native that shows hazard zones, the user's position and the nearest safe shelter.
  • Ray casting checks that tell the app instantly whether someone is standing inside a danger zone.
  • Evacuation routing with Dijkstra's algorithm, extended with a Failover Node Elimination (Top-K) step that sends people to another shelter when the nearest one is full or blocked.
  • Real-time hazard warnings delivered over persistent WebSocket connections.

Results

Alert latency dropped from 677.57 ms to 37.39 ms, an 18x improvement. Rerouting to an alternative shelter takes 0.4066 ms, fast enough to spread people across shelters before bottlenecks form.
